Levelling Up: Using ChatGPT the right way

Updated: Nov 18

It's made its mark! And it looks like it's here to stay, so rather than turn a cold shoulder, its important that we adopt and embrace new technology as a means to elevate and broaden our existing knowledge.

Using ChatGPT as a tool can be incredibly helpful, but it’s essential to use it correctly. It’s here to support your work, not replace it. Here are some actionable ways you can make the most of ChatGPT for social media PLUS a list of prompts at the bottom that you can use as a catalyst for brainstorming and ideas.

Start with strong prompts

  • Tip: The more specific and detailed your prompt, the better your response. Describe your brand or company to ChatGPT, including key messages, tone, and audience preferences.

  • Example: Instead of asking, “Write a product description,” try “Write a friendly and engaging product description for a premium, eco-friendly coffee brand targeting health-conscious consumers.”

Use ChatGPT as an idea generator, not a final solution

  • Tip: Think of ChatGPT’s responses as a starting point. It can help brainstorm ideas, phrases, and concepts, but you should refine and personalise the content to align it fully with your brand or client.

  • Actionable step: Take what ChatGPT provides and add your unique insights or perspective. Remember a strategy doesn't matter if you haven't actually worked through the process and built it out yourself, its difficult to follow through with execution if you don't understand something written for you in a matter of minutes.

Ask for clarity when needed

  • Tip: If a response isn’t clear or doesn’t make sense, ask ChatGPT to rephrase or simplify. This can help you understand complex topics or get to the heart of something quickly.

  • Example: “Can you simplify this explanation of [topic]?” or “Could you rephrase this in layman’s terms?”

Polish professional communications

  • Tip: Use ChatGPT to draft press release or formal communications. Provide specifics about your greater outcomes and what you are trying to communicate.

  • Example: For a press release, you can prompt, “Draft a press release announcing our new initiative aimed at [specific goal], highlighting key benefits and anticipated outcomes.” Then, review and customise it to ensure it aligns with your brand’s tone and message.

Mind regional differences – especially spelling

  • Tip: ChatGPT defaults to American English. To avoid obvious signs of AI-generated content, request NZ English to ensure spellings align with local expectations.

  • Example: Prompt ChatGPT with “Use New Zealand English spelling and phrasing.”

Fact-check and verify information

  • Tip: ChatGPT isn’t a substitute for verified data. If it suggests statistics or references, confirm these details from reliable sources.

  • Actionable Step: Ask ChatGPT to provide a citation, then cross-reference this with genuine sources or databases to ensure accuracy. This is particularly important for client work or public-facing content.

Remember your role in content creation

  • Tip: Clients pay for your expertise, insights, and personal touch—not purely AI-generated content. Use ChatGPT to streamline your work, but always add a human lens to refine, personalise, and ensure authenticity.

Actionable step: Infuse your unique understanding of every ChatCPT touchpoint. Be sure to look over the content produced and ensure you understand it and it matches the level of expertise you have built over many years in the industry.

Prompt ideas for social media content using ChatGPT:

  • “Create three story arcs for an Instagram story series to educate followers about [product/service].”

  • “Write a carousel caption for Instagram that explains the 3 biggest myths about [topic] and why they’re untrue.”

  • “List 5 creative ways we could repurpose our [blog content, YouTube video] for Instagram, with captions.”

  • “Write three versions of a LinkedIn post announcing a new product or service, each in a different tone (e.g., excited, informative, empathetic).”

  • “Write a mini case study post using this [case study]"

  • “Create an engaging TikTok script that outlines the journey of creating [product or service], with scene ideas.”

  • “Suggest 3 email subject lines and preview text for a newsletter announcing our [campaign, product update].”

  • “Draft an Instagram bio for [brand or business] that showcases our mission, personality, and key offering in under 150 characters.”

  • “Create a ‘controversial opinion’ post for LinkedIn about a hot topic in [industry], with both a statement and a brief explanation.”

We know opportunities are endless with ChatGPT and this is truly only scratching the surface but we're also firm believers in nailing those basics! Remember humans connect with humans and personality connects consumers to your brand - I'd like to think no prompt can completely nail who you are and your personality, that's what makes you unique at the end of the day so we sign this blog off by saying use the damn tools, but use them sensibly and don't forget about your razzle dazzle - that is the true secret sauce.
